Chad Curtis
Digital in Nature

New work by Chad Curtis investigates the relationship of organic, living beings to the complex, nuanced environment and digital landscape. Each piece utilizes, to some degree, a crude, home brewed fabrication-and-drawing machine that relies on digital design tools, and computer numeric control.

Chad Curtis currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Trained in Ceramics and Printmaking, Curtis earned his BFA from Minnesota State University and his MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Curtis’s drawing machine retains the tension between high and low-tech, exposing the banality of its components aside the precision of the digital electronics.  The  nuance of the machine resides in this tension, offering accessibility to the viewer that presents a duality –digital and analog — reflecting the state of contemporary life.  The accessibility, further enhanced by the tactility of the imags, challenges the assumptions of both digital processes and of the handmade, residing somewhere in between and less easily categorized.

I just finished installing an exhibition titled digital/analog/analogues at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. This solo exhibition includes a variety of sculptural objects and mechanical drawings from 2008-2009. St. Joseph’s produced a nice press release that captures the idea of the work. Please join me next week for the opening reception on Thursday, November 12th, from 6-8 p.m. The gallery is located in Boland Hall on St. Joseph’s campus on the Main Line in Philadelphia.
